Churchill 2021 Polar Bear Season Highlights 3- Foxes, Snowy owls and Ptarmigan!

Aside from the polar bears, which is undoubtably the flagship species of Churchill’s wildlife viewing, the tundra is home a number of other amazing, exotic, charasmatic species such as foxes, snowy owls and ptarmigan. Here are highlights from these species that I photographed while guiding expeditions during Natural Habitat’s 2021 polar bear season.

A red fox approaches a giant male polar bear. It was amazing to get some images with both animals in the same frame!!

We spotted this snowy owl one morning on the old Hudson Bay powder keg at Cape Merry. As the snow covers the landscape and rodents become inaccessible to them, these stunning “snow leopards of the avian world
migrate to the midwestern and eastern United States.

Normally snowy owls are very shy and elusive, but this beautiful juvenile landed on the roof of the Tundra Rover launch just as all the rovers were returning for the day!

Ptarmigan, after they grow their white winter plumage, are very easy to spot before the snow falls. After it snows, however, they are almost invisible!
