Photographing Bear Behavior — Part 1: The Quest for Food
Originally presented January 13, 2021
Whether it’s a black bear browsing on berries or an iconic scene of an Alaskan brown bear catching a leaping salmon in its jaws, bears engaged in eating make for exciting wildlife photography subjects. Naturalist guide and bear expert Brad Josephs has spent years capturing exhilarating images of bears, including when they are hard at work at the crucial task of sustaining themselves with all the calories and nutrients they need. Bears use a mixture of intelligence, supernatural senses and physical prowess to propagate their species, carving out different niches in varied habitats around the world. From the ultra-carnivorous polar bear to the almost strictly vegetarian panda, Brad’s focus is on how to document the wonder of bears filling their bellies in captivating photos.
Photographing Bear Behavior — Part 2: Mothers & Cubs
Originally presented January 20, 2021
In this second installment on bear photography, Expedition Leader Brad Josephs focuses on bear reproduction and the raising of cubs. He’ll explain mating season behavior, illustrated with summertime photos from Alaska’s Katmai coast, followed by infant births and the cubs’ emergence into the world. Witness the joys of watching mother bears teach their little roly-poly bundles of fur how to make their way in the world, and learn about the behaviors you’re likely to observe that make for delightful photographs. Whether it’s the mighty polar bear roaming the Arctic sea ice, China’s adorable pandas, or the grizzlies of Katmai, with cubs frolicking on the beach as mothers forage for food, mama bears and their babes make for some of nature’s most charming wildlife photography subjects.

Namibia’s Desert Elephants
Originally presented January 6, 2021
Hear from two Colorado-based wildlife biologists who have been researching Namibia’s fascinating desert-adapted elephants for the last 15 years. Laura Brown and Rob Ramey make an annual trip to the Kunene region of Namibia to observe the behaviors and demography of a small sub-population of elephants living in the Hoanib and Hoarusib River drainages. As endangered species specialists, they are seeking solutions to the issue of human-elephant conflict which is the main threat to their survival in this remote area. We will also get an overview of Nat Hab’s Namibia adventures from Expedition Leader Brad Josephs and hear the story of how he met Laura and Rob in Namibia in 2019.
These are a Few of Our Favorite Things! Part 1: Churchill
Originally presented December 28, 2020
Join Nat Hab Expedition Leaders Brad Josephs and Corbin Hawkins as they share memorable events and delightful stories – including some of their favorite individual animals—from their years of guiding nature expeditions. Today’s installment focuses on Churchill, Manitoba, a three-season destination for Nat Hab, with the polar bears of autumn, the northern lights of winter, and the beluga whales and the tundra wildlife of an Arctic summer. While of course Churchill is most famous for its charismatic polar bears—and our guides will tell you how they are able to identify particular individuals—you’ll also hear the story of one special sled dog that warms our hearts.
