I have to say I am super pleased with the results of filming with the Sony A9 while guiding for Natural Habitat this summer! The sharpness of the 100-400 GM, and duel image stabilizer (in the lens and in the camera) made even handholding a breeze at 400- 800 MM (with 2x). Check out a tiny fraction of what I got. I have lots more to come.
You will notice an obvious anti pebble mine theme. We all must keep rising up and spreading the word about this severe threat to one of North America’s greatest natural treasures- the bears and salmon runs of the Alaska Peninsula. Trump’s new EPA, after Trump and Alaska Governor Don Leavy had a meeting in air force 1, decided to lift the Clean Water Act restrictions and let the proposed gold, copper and molybdenum mine move forward. The EPA during the Obama administration shut the project down.
A consortium of 15 native tribes of the region expressed this- “The project would have devastating consequences on the watershed, the fishery and the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. It is a purely political decision designed for a sole purpose: to clear the path for foreign mining interests to plow through a toxic project that no one wants.”
Robert Gillam, a wealthy fishing lodge owner and Trump supporter, has invested 2.5 million dollars to help block the mine. Here is his opinion of the project- “For more than a decade, I have taken on the battle against the Pebble Mine, because, more than any other development proposal in our state’s history, it threatens to forfeit to foreign mining companies an invaluable part of our heritage, something Alaskans cannot afford to lose -— and will never stop defending —- Bristol Bay; the last great salmon fishery on the planet,” I think that says it all. He has donated half a million dollars to Trump’s campaign to encourage him to oppose the mine, but this didn’t stop the recent push to move the project forward. I wonder what Gillam is saying now…..
I am very impressed with the vigorous nature of the opposition that Alaskans, and supporters of salmon, wildlife and wilderness, have shown from all over the world. A special mention goes out to Drew Hamilton, who recently won the Alaska Conservation Foundation’s Daniel Houseberg Wilderness Image Award for using his voice and images to fight the pebble mine. Hats off to Drew! Follow him on instagram and help spread the word! Previous winners include Art Wolfe and Amy Gulick. If you are in Alaska on October 3 you can meet him at the reception from 6-9pm at the Anchorage Museum…..
Keep fighting! No Pebble Mine!

Having seen those bears, that water, the glacier, and those skies for real makes these photos even more significant!
Thank you Martha!
President Trump, please get eaten by a bear, a pack of wolves, and a bald eagle or two!
No pebble mine. I am myself a Canadian and this idea makes me sick.
“NO PEBBLE MINE”‼️‼️‼️
Well said. But fearful. You and Drew are perfect spokesmen to us …. thank your for your never ending commentary on this horrific situation. Selecting a prime geographical area of God’s country. Already designated a national park. Incomprehensible to me, still praying it goes awry. Already congratulated Drew. You two are one with the land and bears up there .
